Chinese culture and the role of numbers...

1 fact coming for every day of advent... day 8.

Number 8 for prosperity

Here in the Western world, many of us associate our ‘lucky number’ with our date of birth, a special occasion or a happy memory. However, all over the world, the theory of your lucky numbers goes much deeper. According to many systems of numerology, your chosen number can reveal your attitudes, personality and character.

Within the Chinese culture, numbers have always played a significant role in everyday life. People in China traditionally associate fortune with lucky numbers, in particular the number 8 - the number of prosperity.

To give you an idea of how highly the number 8 is prized, the telephone number 8888-8888 was sold for a sum equivalent to USD $270,723 in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan Province. Then in 2008, the Chinese government got caught up in the euphoria over the number 8 in their hosting of the Olympics. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began on the 08/08/08, at precisely 8 minutes and 8 seconds past 8pm local Beijing time.  China won in total 100 medals at this event – not sure that can be put down to luck but all in all, a great success for the Chinese nation.

From a retail perspective, global expansion into China continues to flourish. China boasts the world’s second largest economy, roughly 2.3 times larger than Japan’s and 70% of the world’s largest economy, the US. China has enormous potential for investors. According to Economist Intelligence, the next five years will see annual retail volumes in China grow by 8% compared to the annual average of  0.1% in Western Europe, 1.8% in North American and 3.2% globally.

If this is to be the case, 8 is the number of prosperity indeed. Stay lucky!
